Controversies[]
Butch Hartman, the creator of The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, and other Nickelodeon hits, has faced a series of controversies over the years that have complicated his public image. Here's a breakdown of the major issues:
Accusations of Art Plagiarism[]
Butch Hartman has faced multiple controversies since departing Nickelodeon in 2018. In 2021, he was accused of art plagiarism after fans discovered that a commissioned drawing of Mikasa from Attack on Titan closely resembled a Japanese artist’s work, sparking broader concerns about tracing in his portfolio.
Oaxis Streaming Platform Controversy[]
In 2018, Hartman launched a Kickstarter for Oaxis Entertainment, a proposed family-friendly streaming platform. While the campaign raised over $270,000, backers later criticized Hartman for promoting the project on Christian media outlets and revealing religious intentions that were not disclosed during fundraising. He later denied that Oaxis was faith-based.
Claims About Prayer and Healing[]
Hartman has also drawn criticism for promoting prayer-based healing, including claims that prayer cured his wife's fibromyalgia and could potentially heal autism. These statements were widely condemned by medical professionals and advocacy groups.
Online Behavior and Alleged Harassment[]
Additional backlash has stemmed from Hartman's online behavior, including allegations of deleting critical comments and making insensitive remarks about fellow voice actors. One particularly controversial claim involved him allegedly blaming Tara Strong for the suicide of Mary Kay Bergman, which led to significant outrage within fan communities.
These incidents have contributed to a more divisive public perception of Hartman, once celebrated for his contributions to children's animation.
