The Disasteroid or the Ecto-Ranium Asteroid is a giant asteroid floating through outer space that is made up entirely of the anti-ghost element ecto-ranium. It serves as a central plot element of the final Danny Phantom episode, "Phantom Planet," in which it is hurtling towards Earth on an apocalyptic collision course.
Appearance[]
The Disasteroid is easily recognizable by its glowing green surface (due to its ecto-ranium composition) and the skull-like formation on its side.
Role in "Phantom Planet"[]
The "Ecto-Ranium Asteroid" originated from within the rings of Saturn. At some point, Vlad Masters discovered it's existance and send a satellite to the planet, hoping to mine it's resources and build weapons to conquer the entire Ghost Zone. Vlad would personally pay a visit to his latest endeavor by traveling through a nearby Ghost portal, only to be followed by Danny Phantom. During their subsequent fight, the satellite was destroyed and the explosion pushed the asteroid away, beyond Vlad's reach, but also, unbeknownst to either of them at the time, sending it on a collision course with Earth.
It's next appearance is when the media reported on the asteroid, now labeled the "Disasteroid", heading toward Earth, and that it's impact would result in an extinction-level event. Over the next few days, several countries would attempt to destroy the asteroid by launching missiles into it, but with no success.
Despite being indirectly responsible for the global crisis, Vlad only cared about using the situation to advance his own personal agenda. First, to make world leaders desperate enough to give into his demands, he exaggerated the threat of the Disasteroid by tricking Jack Fenton and Masters' Blasters into destroying the wrong asteroid. Next, he publicly revealed his identity offered up a plan to can stop the cataclysm: in return 500 billion dollards and being crowned "absolute ruler" of the Earth, he would make the Disasteroid intangible so that it passes harmlessly through the planet. However, when he attempts to follow through on his plan, he is foiled by the asteroid's ecto-ranium composition, which prevents ghosts from touching it.
Later, in a final attempt to save the planet, Danny rallies all of the ghosts from the Ghost Zone to help implement a new plan: make the Earth intangible so that the Disasteroid passes straight through it. While hesitant at first, they all agree to help upon realizing that the fates of Earth and the Ghost Zone are linked, even some of Danny's most evil enemies (except Dark Danny).
The Disasteroid was last seen crashing into Vlad, who was left stranded in space due to being unable to return to Earth with his identity exposed. However, in A Glitch in Time it is revealed that he survived his encounter with the asteroid.
Trivia[]
- It is likely inspired by or similar to Nibiru, an asteroid-like planet (identified with the real asteroid C/2010 X1 or Elenin) often said in hoaxes to be on a collision course with Earth, having caused Pluto to break free from Saturn's orbit.
