The proto-portal is the device that is responsible for giving Vlad Masters ecto-acne and his ghost powers.
History[]
The proto-portal was the prototype and first model of the ghost portal. During their college years, Vlad, Jack, and Maddie worked together on creating a portal to the Ghost Zone. However, things took a turn for the worst when Jack accidentally poured diet soda instead of ecto-purifier into the porto-portal's filtrator. And despite Maddie's warnings that his calculations were incorrect, Jack fired up the machine.
The resulting blast of ectoplasmic energy from the portal hit Vlad, who'd been standing right in front of it, in the face. The accident infected Vlad with ecto-acne, upending his life but also gave him his ghost powers.[1]
In the alternate timeline shown in "Masters of All Time," it was Jack who was hit with the portal's blast and got ghost powers, since Danny had pushed Vlad out of the way. Danny later attempted to use this portal to get to the Ghost Zone and undo the altered timeline, but was chased away before he could attempt to activate it.
